Disney’s Global Expansion: Disneyland Abu Dhabi

Disney is about to open an exciting new chapter in its global story with the announcement of Disneyland Abu Dhabi, a groundbreaking resort set to be built in the heart of the United Arab Emirates. In partnership with Miral, the leading creator of immersive destinations and experiences in Abu Dhabi, Disney will bring its world-renowned magic to Yas Island, establishing the first-ever Disney resort in the Middle East.

This ambitious development marks a significant milestone not only for Disney but also for the transformation of Yas Island into a premier global hub for entertainment and leisure. Once realized, Disneyland Abu Dhabi will become the seventh Disney theme park resort worldwide, joining the prestigious ranks of Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disney Resort.

“This groundbreaking resort destination represents a new frontier in theme park development,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences. “Our resort in Abu Dhabi will be the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio. Anchored by a stunning waterfront, this location offers an unparalleled opportunity to tell our stories in fresh, innovative ways. It’s a gateway to a new region, where we will welcome more families than ever before. Ultimately, this resort will embody what’s possible when creativity meets progress.”

Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, Group CEO of Miral, echoed the sentiment: “Bringing a Disney resort to Yas Island is a historic milestone in our journey to elevate the island’s global standing as a world-class destination. Together with Disney, we are crafting a place where imagination and innovation know no bounds, inspired by the visionary leadership of the UAE.”

The planned resort will deliver everything fans expect from Disney — signature attractions, themed accommodations, unforgettable dining, and immersive storytelling — while also embracing the rich heritage and forward-looking spirit of Abu Dhabi. From architectural design to entertainment offerings, Disneyland Abu Dhabi aims to merge Disney’s timeless magic with the region’s vibrant cultural identity.

For The Walt Disney Company, this move represents a strategic expansion aligned with its broader goals of international diversification and long-term growth. The Middle East, particularly the UAE, is a market rich with potential: a young, affluent population, a growing tourism sector, and a hunger for premium entertainment experiences. Yas Island, already home to major attractions like Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World, offers Disney a well-established tourism infrastructure and a receptive audience. Partnering with Miral reduces development risk and provides a powerful platform to amplify Disney’s brand across theme parks, hospitality, merchandise, and media in a high-growth region.

“This is a thrilling moment for our company,” said Robert A. Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “Abu Dhabi’s deep appreciation for the arts and innovation makes it the perfect home for our next resort. As our seventh destination, Disneyland Abu Dhabi will rise in spectacular fashion — combining modern architecture and cutting-edge technology to create deeply immersive entertainment experiences. It will be authentically Disney, yet uniquely Emirati — an oasis of joy and inspiration that celebrates our beloved characters and stories in completely new ways, destined to delight generations to come.”

When news of the project first emerged, there was understandable skepticism — rumors about Disney’s expansion into the Middle East have circulated for years. The region has seen numerous theme park announcements that never came to fruition. However, this partnership with Miral, coupled with Disney’s renewed global strategy under Bob Iger’s leadership, gives this project a solid foundation. While cautious optimism is still warranted, Disneyland Abu Dhabi feels like the most credible and ambitious step toward making that long-imagined vision a reality.
